NEWS!

We are very privileged to have a member of the Guelph community, Christina Pilgrim, participating in this year's Ascent for Alzheimer's, a fundraising event organized by the Alzheimer Society of B.C. Christina has decided to raise money for the Alzheimer Society of Guelph-Wellington by climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, in Tanzania.

At 19,340 feet, Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain on the continent of Africa. More than 130 Canadians have literally climbed mountains in the fight against Alzheimer’s, reaching for the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro as part of Ascent for Alzheimer’s.

Guelph native to climb Mount Kilimanjaro for Alzheimer’s disease

One of the hardest days on the mountain is going to be World Alzheimer’s Day, a day dedicated to everyone faced with the uphill battle of Alzheimer’s disease. It will be a great thing to reflect on while climbing that day.” – Christina Pilgrim, Guelph, ON

August 27, 2009, Toronto, ON - Christina Pilgrim, a 27-year-old Guelph native, will start climbing to the peak of 19,340-foot Mount Kilimanjaro on September 15 as part of the annual Ascent for Alzheimer's. One of two Ontarians in the seven-member Canadian team, Christina is climbing to raise funds for local programs and services at the Alzheimer Society of Guelph-Wellington in memory of her grandmother, who battled Alzheimer’s for 10 years, and to support her clients at St. Joseph's Health Centre, where she is a Senior Programmer for Outreach Services.

Each Ascent climber has committed to raise $10,000 to support their local Alzheimer Society. Christina’s personal goal is $20,000 and so far has received $16,000 in donations.

“Christina is a real inspiration to all of us at the Alzheimer Society of Guelph-Wellington,” says Paul Visschedyk, Executive Director. “The funds she has raised will significantly impact local residents that rely on our services. We’re proud to support her trek to Mount Kilimanjaro and wish her and the rest of the team much success.”

Since 1998, more than 130 Canadians have participated in the Ascent in the fight against Alzheimer's disease. By reaching the summit, Christina hopes to represent the everyday joys and successes of people battling Alzheimer’s and to spread awareness about this devastating disease.

Every 15 minutes, someone in Ontario is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia.  The disease also exacts a huge toll on their families and caregivers whose numbers are estimated at 7.5 million Canadians – or one in four families.
